Updated help for Taiwan residents

AN updated version of the WeChat account of the Shanghai Taiwanese Service Center was launched yesterday to better serve Taiwan people in Shanghai.

The update incorporates various new functions, such as making appointments in hospitals and certificate renewal in related departments, buying train tickets and checking public transportation. The aim is to make life more convenient for people from Taiwan in the city.

The “Shtbfw” account was first launched in 2014 and provided news about cross-Strait issues. It was updated last year and a test run of the increased functions was carried out last month.

“Most of our followers are aged between 18 and 35 and they wished us to provide more service-oriented functions,” said Xu Hao, director of the city’s service center for Taiwanese.

“For example, every year, there are many Taiwan parents asking about policies for their children to study in local schools. So we added phone numbers of district education bureaus for them to make inquiries directly.”

Followers of the service can now also look for recruitment advertisements and make appointments for hospitals, marriage registration and legal consultations.

They can check the real-time traffic situation on local roads, as well as records of traffic violations.

From the account, they can also find links to WeChat accounts of other institutions covering Taiwan affairs.

There are about 300,000 Taiwan people working and living in Shanghai, according to the Taiwan Affairs Office in Shanghai.
