Unisex convenience marks Toilet Day
SHANGHAI’S first unisex public toilet building is to go into operation in Pudong New Area before November 19, World Toilet Day.
The city’s public sanitation authorities announced yesterday that the newly built facility had 10 toilet stalls that can be used by both males and females.
It is located at the intersection of Zhangjiabang Road and Pudong Road S., where there are many runners, strollers and passers-by, officials said.
Jiang Ruizhi, an official in charge of the operation of the toilet with the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, said privacy and safety were given high consideration.
“Flexibly adjusting the use of toilets based on real demand will help resolve the problem of improper setting of toilet cubicles,” said Fu Liping, another official with the bureau.
The 100-square-meter facility will incorporate a separate room designed for people who need others’ help when using the toilet. Parents with children and adults accompanying seniors or disabled people will be able to use the room.
Another separate room will house male urinals.
