Unclaimed US$1.2 million lottery prize goes to charity

A 7.3 MILLION yuan (US$1.2 million) lottery jackpot that went unclaimed by its rightful owner has been donated to the social welfare fund, the Shanghai Welfare Lottery Center said yesterday.

The prize was the largest to go unclaimed in the city this year. The biggest jackpot ever to go unclaimed in Shanghai was 10 million yuan in 2011. The winning ticket for the recent lost millions was sold on July 24 at an outlet on Lanxi Road in Putuo District.

The center opened a 24-hour hotline last week to try to find the winner, but no one came forward. It urged people who buy tickets to check their numbers carefully.
