Two jailed for illegally trading student information

TWO people who illegally traded students’ information in Shanghai have been jailed for personal information infringements, Putuo District People’s Court said yesterday.

The buyer surnamed Wang, a part-time basketball trainer, paid 18,000 yuan (US$2,658) to the seller, surnamed Lin, for personal information of primary and middle school students around the city, the court said. His aim was to entice parents to sign up their children for basketball lessons.

Information included students’ names, addresses, birthdates, their parents’ names and phone numbers.

Wang said he knew Lin from a QQ group, an online chatting and information exchange platform, and he received the namelist from Lin via QQ on March 10. Wang managed to call parents of about 400 students from two schools in Putuo before police identified and caught him nine days after his calls began.

Lin, who was caught on March 16 after police received an anonymous tip-off, had been selling financial products since February, since when she had spent about 9,000 yuan buying information of nearly 100,000 potential customers from the Internet.

Later, she expanded into selling on the information she had gathered, the court said.

Besides the deal with Wang, she was involved in more illicit selling operations, earning more than 5,000 yuan, court said.

Lin was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment, and fined 20,000 yuan. Wang received six months, with a fine of 10,000 yuan.

The court added that the information sold by Lin was also obtained from the Internet, but it was hard to trace who had originally leaked the information.
