Tunnel work slows traffic

TRAFFIC on Yanggao Road S. in Pudong has worsened since construction work started on building a tunnel.

Many drivers were unaware of the new lanes that have been put up by the side of the road from the Pujian Road Bridge to the Century Avenue.

At 8:30am, traffic stretched for 2.5 kilometers from Gaoke Road W. to Pujian Road Bridge along Yanggao Road S., which is a major thoroughfare leading to the Lujiazui Financial District.

On the opposite side, cars emerged from the tunnel under the Century Avenue Sundial, only to face heavy congestion.

“The drivers had to take little turns to stick to the distorted lanes, which slowed down the traffic. But we believe the congestion will be relieved once they get used to the road,” said Wang Hui, a police officer from Pudong Traffic Police.

Traffic was equally bad at the intersection of Huamu and Eshan roads at Yanggao Road S., where the Lujiazui Software Park is located.

The zebra crossing on Yanggao Road S. now stretches 100 meters because of the new lanes, and pedestrians could be seen running through the 40-second green light.

There were fortunately no traffic accidents reported near the area under construction.

About 30 traffic police officers have been deployed on the intersections along Yanggao Road S. Police said they will make further adjustments for vehicles at intersections and adjust the traffic light timings.

The tunnel is expected to be completed by 2018.
