Truck fire on Sonjiang highway leaves traffic backed up 14 kilometers

A TRUCK carrying paper products caught fire on a Shanghai highway this morning, leading to hours of congestion with cars lined up for 14 kilometers.

The 50-ton truck caught fire suddenly when it was running along the G15 Highway's section in Songjiang District at 7am. Firefighters arrived and blocked two of the three lanes to rescue the driver and get the truck safely off the road. Nobody was injured, though the truck was burned. So were two thirds of the goods it carried, mostly paper products such as boxes.

The fire was put out by 9am, but by then traffic moving in the direction of Ningbo was  seriously affected. Footage taken at 10:45am by the city's road supervision center showed vehicles lined up for more than 14 kilometers.

The remains of the truck and paper products were removed from the road about 11am, and the two blocked lanes were reopened. There was still a four-kilometer-long traffic jam at 1:30pm.
