Traffic police step up road checks for drunk driving
POLICE have stepped up road safety checks and fined over 4,000 drivers for traffic offenses.
In Pudong, they set up road blocks to check drunk driving, especially on streets near restaurants.
On Gaomuqiao Road near Sunqiao Road, a driver surnamed Wu was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. He now faces 1,000 yuan (US$146) fine, 12 demerits in his license and six months suspension of his license.
Three other drivers were caught for the same offense on the same day.
Pudong traffic police said they had fined 4,240 drivers, but most of them involved illegal parking.
Also, traffic police in Xuhui District carried out safety checks on school buses as the new school semester draws near.
Apart from checking lights, tires, fire-extinguishers and emergency hammers, police also talked to drivers, asking them to make sure that their passengers wear seat belts.
