Trade union wants nurseries at work places

SHANGHAI will open 50 nurseries at various places of work by the end of the year to allow young parents to take care of their children, the city’s trade union announced yesterday.

A scheme to that effect has been tried and tested in 12 companies and institutions with positive results.

“As we opened more breastfeeding rooms, we found that many working mothers also had concerns about their children’s day care,” said He Huijuan, deputy chairwoman of the union.

The 12 nurseries included day care centers that ran from 9am to 6pm, allowing working parents to pick up their children straight from work; a summer nursery for unattended children during school vacation; and a nursery for parents with emergency needs.

Shanghai-based travel company Ctrip was one of the companies that worked with the union. The Ctrip nursery provides full-time day care for children aged between 1.5 to 3. Primary school children, who are unattended after school, can also go to the in-house nursery and wait for their parents.

A total of 95 children are using the nursery.

“The nursery not only meets the needs of our employees looking for day care services, but it also keep them happy,” said Liang Jianzhang, the co-founder of the company.

He Huijuan said the need for nurseries grew stronger following the relaxation of the one-child policy. “Its purpose is to provide support to new parents. Companies can set up nurseries based on their resources and needs,” He said.

About 80 percent of local women, who are in the child-bearing age, are unwilling to have a second child as they had no one to take care of the babies, a study found. The union said Shanghai had only 35 nurseries — down by 21 from 2011 — that could handle around 5,222 children.

The union also plans to add 800 breastfeeding rooms, known as “Care for Mothers Huts,” at work places and public areas in Shanghai over the next two years. The added rooms will take the number of breastfeeding rooms in the city to over 2,500. It has urged companies and enterprises to open more such rooms for their employees.
