Township fined for choking rivers
SHANGHAI Water Authority fined the Pujiang Township government in Minhang District 50,000 yuan (US$8,055) for blocking and filling some 80,000 square meters of creeks and rivers and damaging ecology.
According to stipulation, the town government must apply to the water authority and open the same number of new waterways and creeks before concretizing the old ones. However, the town government only opened 30,000 square meters of new water lanes, the authority announced.
Law enforcement teams linked with the authority caught a developer who was found filling the creeks which he said he bought from the government. The developer showed them the document issued by the town government.
The water authority has pledged to dredge river, remove illegal structures by the riverside and rebuild sewage and irrigation systems in suburban areas in a major campaign to clean up the waterways. Shanghai has a wide stretch of polluted waterways especially in the suburban areas. Many rivers were blocked or had turned black because of illegal dumping.
