Teens ‘held friend over gambling debts’
TWO teenagers alleged to have held a friend for eight days to force him to repay gambling debts have been charged with illegal confinement, Jiading District Prosecutors’ Office said yesterday.
Prosecutors said the 18-year-olds, surnamed Zhang and Jin, and the victim, surnamed Lu, are childhood friends who often went to underground casinos.
In May, Lu lost money in a casino and borrowed 5,000 yuan (US$805) from loan sharks. When Lu didn’t repay the debt, his friends feared the loan sharks would come looking for them, said prosecutors.
They are said to have forced Lu to write an IOU and told him to win back the cash by gambling.
During his confinement in an apartment and then a hotel, Lu accompanied his captors on trips to casinos.
He is said to have won enough money to pay the loan sharks, but continued gambling and ended up 70,000 yuan in debt.
On June 9, when they were in an Internet cafe, Lu used his QQ instant messaging account to send the address to his aunt. His father and aunt came and rescued him.
