Taxi companies remove backseat ad screens as Touchmedia goes bust

LOCAL taxi companies are removing the ad screens for backseat passengers after the interactive screen operator Touchmedia defaulted on payment.

As of April 2013, there were 22,000 Touchmedia screens installed on local cabs.

Former employees of Touchmedia have reportedly claimed that the company has gone bankrupt and is undergoing liquidation process.

When a Shanghai Daily reporter visited the Touchmedia office in Shanghai, it had already been emptied. Their registered number was no longer in service.

Dazhong Taxi has about 4,000, or half of its fleet, installed with the screens. They were covered by plastic caps from July, as Touchmedia "failed to fulfill the contract since the end of last year," a company official said.

Another local taxi company, Haibo, also said it had terminated its contract with Touchmedia and the screens removed.

"I occasionally tap the screen during a ride to kill time, but I won’t miss it if it is gone," a local resident Zhang Jue said. “After all, I use ride-hailing services more often than taxis now.  And if I want to kill time, I have the smartphone.”

According to Touchmedia’s website, it has about 50,000 interactive screens nationwide covering seven cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
