Suspended jail terms for targeting foreigners
TEN gangsters who ran a bar in Jing’an District, offering illegal massage services and ripping off foreign customers, have received suspended jail terms from 12 to 37 months for extortion, according to Jing’an People’s Court.
The bar opened on Wuding Road last February. The gang, all from out of town, recruited women to encourage customers to drink and pay for a sexual massage service. The defendants also sold inferior liquor at highly inflated prices, and forced customers to buy the alcohol, the court said.
If customers refused to pay, they would be threatened and confined within the bar. When customers did leave, they would be followed in an attempt to ensure they did not call police, the court said.
In one month, eight foreigners were ripped off a total of 44,180 yuan (US$6,560). Some of them later contacted police, and the bar, which was not named in court, was busted on March 15.
