‘Stunning’ shop thief jailed for 11 years
A WOMAN who shocked two sales assistants with a stun baton before stealing items from a luxury store in Shanghai has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, the Huangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.
The 31-year-old, surnamed Wang, entered the store on Nanchang Road on July 5 and selected two Hermes bags and two Rolex watches.
As the assistants were wrapping the items, Wang took out the stun baton and shocked them with it.
She then ran out of the store, but was swiftly apprehended by a pedestrian. Police were called and the woman was taken into custody.
In court, prosecutors said Wang had a previous conviction for theft and claimed she stole in order to pay off a credit card debt of about 90,000 yuan (US$14,700).
The court said the size of the sentence reflected the severity of the attack on the two salespeople and the fact that Wang was a repeat offender.
