Students have innovative ideas for the fair

CHINA’S first self-developed unmanned deep water vehicle, as well as rescue robots and high-tech constructive materials, will be displayed at the China International Industry Fair, to be held from November 1 to 5 in Shanghai.

The fair, held annually in the city since its launch in 1999, is expected to attract 2,100 exhibitors and more than 130,000 trade visitors this year. It also offers students the opportunity to present their inventions and innovational ideas.

Under the organization of Shanghai Education Commission, this year’s fair will be the third year that students have been able to take part in the fair, where exhibitors showcase a range of high-tech products and services for the industry.

Sixty-nine colleges and universities will take part in this year’s fair, which will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Qingpu District. Among them, 17 are from Shanghai, including Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Other universities known for their technological innovation abilities, such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Nanjing University and Wuhan University, as well as six universities from Taiwan and Japan, will all send student representatives for the five-day event. Student exhibitors will bring 690 inventions and projects to the fair. More than 60 of the inventions have received national or provincial awards.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University will display the 1,500-meter ROV underwater system. It is the country’s first self-developed unmanned deep water device and is designed to be used for oil and gas project maintenance.

Tongji University will present a road-sweeping robot. Fully equipped with sensors and circuitry, the machine uses the Beidou satellite system to navigate, and is powered by lithium batteries. It is said to be able to deal with 95 percent of the situations asked of it.

Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine also has a robot to showcase — a robot that can collect data from daily activities for analysis, with the aim of then providing health or medical advice.

Nankai University will introduce an anti-corrosive technology that can be used in the restoration of steel pillars that are kept in sea water.
