Striking new ground in looking after our elderly

A NEW senior care home for 1,700 people with one-stop services has opened in Shanghai’s first senior care area, in Minhang District.

The 150,000-square-meter project called Evergreen Homeland in Huacao Town has four apartment buildings, six courtyard-style houses and a medical care building.

The medical care building is managed by Shuguang Hospital and residents can receive treatment from doctors from Huashan Hospital and Huadong Hospital with medical insurance cards allowed.

It also caters to patients with disabilities and dementia.

Huacao has 47,000 residents with a permanent residency permit, and 29 percent of them are 60 or older, said Chen Jian, deputy governor of the town.

“The high-end senior care home will help alleviate a shortage of beds at senior care facilities and provide one-stop services to the elderly as we encourage senior care homes to incorporate medical care services,” she said.

There are riverside platforms, greenery paths and gardens inside the complex.

The center also has intelligent television sets allowing seniors to talk with their children face to face, a one-click call butler service and various other facilities.

It also has a 500-seat cinema, an organic farm and a workshop to allow people to start their own business.

And it offers courses on cooking, calligraphy, potter, traditional opera, history, health and culture.

“The concept is to encourage seniors to have an energetic and young lifestyle after retirement and fully enjoy life,” said Chen Xingyan, who is the president of NEY International, the organization that operates the home.

She said Chinese seniors tend to keep themselves indoors after retirement, but this community will change the mindset and offer a platform for them to make friends.

Because Huacao Town has a large number of expats and overseas Chinese, bilingual services are also available.

The project on Jinguang Road is the first plot of land dedicated to senior care in Shanghai, and its transfer price is much lower than commercial housing land.

It can not be traded like houses with property rights. The developer retains ownership and sole management.

Seniors can rent apartments or purchase membership. The shortest period is one month of rent. The trial operation will allow some seniors to live free as a trial. The price has not been announced yet.
