Straw burners spotted
SEVENTY straw burning spots in Shanghai have been detected by police helicopters in the past three weeks, officials said yesterday.
Burning of straw has been banned in Shanghai since October as part of new legislation to improve air quality. Helicopter inspections from October 25 to November 17 by the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, the Shanghai Agriculture Commission and the Shanghai Public Security Bureau located 70 straw burning incidents in Chongming County and Fengxian, Jinshan, Jiading, Qingpu districts and the Pudong New Area.
Violations will be noted in district government achievement records, and affect officials’ year-end bonuses, according to the bureau.
