Spate of bronze artwork thefts at creek

SECURITY is being increased following recent thefts of bronze plates featuring scenes of old Shanghai on display along Suzhou Creek.
The managing authority there is stepping up patrols and asking for help from police after the frequency of thefts increased in recent months.
The artworks, featuring scenes of the city’s history and cultural heritage, are hung on display along a decorative wall in the greenery area at the west side of Wuning Road Bridge in Putuo District.
But by this week, 33 of the 54 plates had been stolen, with just the empty frames left behind.
According to Putuo District scenery office, which manages the 13.5-kilometer-long public greenery area along Suzhou Creek, around four or five bronze plates have been stolen every year since they were put up in 2008. This rate has recently increased.
Lamp bulbs and electric wires have also been stolen.
Staff suspect that the bronze plates are stolen to be sold on for scrap metal.
