Spark from welding gear blamed for hospital blaze
THE fire that broke out on Wednesday at the No. 411 Hospital in Hongkou District was likely caused by a spark from electric welding equipment.
The 20-story ward building was being renovated by Hengyuan Construction Group at the time.
Project Manager Ren Xiaoding told Shanghai Television that the blaze started in the middle of the building and might have been caused by sparks falling from welding gear being used higher up. The fire was also likely fueled by the bamboo boards used on the scaffolding, he said.
The building on Sichuan Road N. is now being cleaned, while a full investigation has been launched by the local fire department and safety inspection authority.
In 2010, 58 people were killed when scaffolding around a residential building in Jing’an District caught fire.
No one was hurt in Wednesday’s blaze in Hongkou.
