Smoking widely tolerated in workplaces

SMOKERS are still lighting up in 47 percent of local workplaces, according to the latest survey on tobacco use.

About 2,000 residents in eight districts were surveyed by the Shanghai Association on Tobacco Control between October and December last year, and 23.3 percent of those aged between 15 and 69 said they smoke, lower than the national figure of 27.7 percent.

In Shanghai, 46.8 percent of males aged over 15 are smokers compared to just 2 percent of adult females.

The youngest age people started smoking was 10 and the youngest for daily smoking was 14.

“The smoking rate remained stable in the city for years and we are pushing for non-smoking workplaces to encourage more people to quit smoking and protect non-smokers,” said the SASC’s Chen De.

“People spend a lot of time in workplaces, so a non-smoking working environment is important for people’s health.”

Exposure to second-hand smoke is a serious problem in the city, as 59.8 percent of people said they have to endure passive smoking every week and about 26.6 percent of them have to put up with it every day.

Many people have to endure it when they get home from work too: 27.7 are exposed to second-hand smoke every day and 11.6 percent every week. Legislators are working on an amendment to the current smoking control law.

Under proposals for the amendment bill, the restrictions on smoking indoors should be extended to all public venues, workplaces and public transport facilities.

Selected outdoor venues, including parks, tourism spots and places where children congregate will be added to the list of restricted areas.
