Smart cameras catch not so smart drivers

SHANGHAI traffic police will place more smart cameras across the city this year as the new traffic regulation takes effect on Saturday.

Police said they will add more cameras that target drivers not wearing seat belts or using mobile phones. Since July, cameras have caught 36,990 motorists not belted up and 2,740 making calls.

More cameras to catch drivers not giving way to pedestrians on zebra crossings are also planned.

At the crossroads of Eshan Road and Nanquan Road in Pudong, a trial camera targeting left-turning drivers not yielding to pedestrians crossing the street has caught 59 offenders since March 3, police said.

A similar camera has been placed on Changshou Road near Jiaozhou Road in Putuo District. This camera and another at the crossroads of Yongxing Road and Gonghexin Road have captured 2,559 offenses since December. Police said they will add a further 51 such cameras to downtown locations this year.

Technology has also helped to catch drivers honking horns in urban districts — behavior that is banned within the Outer Ring Road. There were 575 such offenses caught last month by a sonar-based camera located at the crossroads of Huashan Road and Yan’an Road M.

By the end of this year, there will be 25 such cameras in downtown .

Sang Zhigang, head of the technology department of Shanghai traffic police, said traffic cameras are becoming more versatile, with some of them able to capture nine kinds of offenses on one camera.

There are about 8,000 traffic cameras around the city, and the plan is to increase the number to 18,000 by the end of this year.

The number of traffic accidents in Shanghai in the year ending March 25 has fallen 24 percent from the year-earlier period, traffic police said.

The number of accidents caused by cars running red lights and speeding dropped 65 and 49 percent in the period, police added.
