Skin-care products blamed for allergies
NEARLY three-quarters of cosmetics allergy and inflammation cases reported to Shanghai Food and Drug Administration were caused by basic skin-care products.
The remainder were caused by products like perfume, make-up, sunscreen and hair dye, according to the administration’s latest report.
The report is based on data and cases collected last year from 19 hospitals around the city and from manufacturers and social organizations.
The hospitals, including Shanghai Dermatology Hospital, Huashan Hospital, Fengxian District Institute of Dermatology, have been named by the food and drug administration as “surveillance hospitals” to monitor the safety of the cosmetics industry.
Causing allergy and skin inflammation does not necessarily mean that there is a quality problem with the product because some people might react more sensitively to certain chemicals than others. But cosmetics manufacturers are required to give clear directions for using the products.
Of the 1,082 reported cases, more than 95 percent involved female users, 60 percent of whom were aged between 20 and 39.
According to the report, 73.6 percent of allergy and inflammation cases were caused by daily skin-care products, followed by perfume (9.3 per cent), make-up (8.67 percent), sunscreen (2.92 per cent) and hair dye (2.69 per cent).
Among the 408 reported products of which the source could be established, about 38 percent were bought online, while the rest were bought from counters, supermarkets or overseas.
The administration has reminded cosmetics consumers to buy products from proper channels.
