Shotgun in accident was stolen by teen

A SHOTGUN with which an 8-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the face last week had been stolen by a teenager from a neighbor.

The injured boy, from neighboring Anhui Province, underwent a six-hour operation to remove 90 pellets last Wednesday at the Shanghai No. 9 People’s Hospital.

The boy is in stable condition but will need another operation soon, said the hospital.

A 13-year-old boy, surnamed Cai, from Huangtuan Village in Feidong County, had hidden the homemade single-barreled gun in the loft of his home after he stole it several years ago from a neighbor surnamed Zhang, xinmin.cn reported yesterday.

Last Tuesday, Cai brought it out when playing with other children. When Cai pulled the trigger, it fired into the face of the 8-year-old, said the website.

The teenager threw the gun into a river after the incident, said the website. Police have since recovered the weapon.

Investigations found that the gun belonged to Zhang’s husband, who died in 2002. It wasn’t stated how he acquired the illegal weapon.

Police asked Cai’s parents to discipline him as he was too young to be criminally liable, said the website.

The victim faces a high risk of disfigurement, said doctors with the hospital.
