Shanghai police recover 928 phones stolen at Metro, railway stations

A total of 928 mobile phones stolen at Metro stations and Shanghai Railway Station this year were recovered from a gang of 19, police said on Thursday.

Among the suspects are 13 pickpockets, one “buyer” of the stolen phones and five others who sold the phones in a computer shopping mall near the railway station.

The stolen phones were mostly the latest models of iPhone with a total value estimated to be over four million yuan (US$602,000).

Police said this is the largest case of its kind ever busted in Shanghai.

The “buyer”, surnamed Ma, allegedly met with the pickpockets every morning at 10am near the railway station and sold the phones to owners at 3pm.

Ma bought the illegal phones for 1,000 to 3,000 each, police said.

Huang Hanke, a police officer from Shanghai Metro Police’s Shanghai Railway Station branch who was in charge of the case, said the phones were sold as second-hand phones to both shoppers in the mall and customers on the internet.

Up till now, police have managed to confirm owners of about 250 phones and get into contact with 50.

“The job is not easy for us because many of the phones have already been sold by the suspects,” Huang said.

A few people who lost their phones to the pickpocketers said they were listening to music with earphones plugged in their phone in the pocket when it happened.

Cui Lei, who lost his phone at a metro station in Pudong during rush hours in March, said he reported the theft to policemen at the metro station right away but didn’t expect that the phone would be recovered.

“I got a call from the police when I was in Europe on a business trip last month, and I was surprised and thankful,” he told Shanghai Daily.

Those who have lost their phones are advised to contact the police with the receipt of purchase and the IMEI number of their phones.
