Shanghai braces for Disneyland, Yuyuan crowd

SHANGHAI police will deploy more officers at key points and use location-based service system as it anticipates large crowds at Shanghai Disneyland and Yuyuan Garden during the Spring Festival holiday.

Shanghai Disneyland expects between 60,000 to 65,000 visitors daily except on the Chinese New Year’s Eve tomorrow. The average daily number of visitors at Yuyuan Garden will be about 150,000.

Over 30,000 police officers will be out on the streets on Chinese New Year’s Eve tomorrow and on the evening of February 19 — the fourth day of the Year of the Dog when people head to the temples to worship the God of Wealth.

Officers will keep a close watch on shopping hubs, landmark buildings, tourist spots, traffic hubs including airports, railway stations and Metro lines, and temples from the beginning of the holiday to the Lantern Festival, which falls on March 2.

About 400,000 volunteers will help the police in maintaining order in residential neighborhoods, police said.

The fire authority said it has marked out 661 streets that are fire prone. About 5,600 boxes of illegal fireworks have been seized since December 1 last year.

Shanghai traffic police said they will deploy 30 percent more officers to focus on the city’s expressways.

A temporary command center will be set up to monitor traffic at the G40 expressway’s Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge that connects Shanghai with Jiangsu Province.

While traffic management and crowd control may be a headache for the police, the air quality is generally expected to be fine. The weather will however fluctuate between warm and wet days through the weeklong holiday.

The mercury started to climb yesterday with the high reaching 12 degrees Celsius. It will rise to 18 degrees today, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

On Lunar New Year’s Eve tomorrow, there will be some drizzles in the evening and the high will drop to 9 degrees. But the brief wet spell will be gone by Friday and the temperature will head up again over the weekend, forecasters said.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy, with the high reaching 12 degrees. However, rain will be back again late on Sunday and last till Tuesday.

A new cold front will hit the city on Monday when the high dips to 9 degrees. It will drop even further to 8 degrees on Tuesday with occasional drizzles. Wednesday will be overcast to cloudy, with the high hovering around 7 degrees.

Air quality over the seven-day holiday period will be fine, the city’s environmental authority said.

Cold February

It has been a cold February so far. Till yesterday, Xujiahui recorded low temperatures below zero degrees for seven days. The city’s weather authority has already declared nine yellow frost alerts this year.

The out-patient services at most hospitals won’t be available during the holiday, except emergency services.

All exit-entry administration centers will remain closed. Normal working hours will resume from February 24.

From February 14 to 21, nine traffic accident insurance settlement service points will be set up near nine toll gates on the expressways in Qingpu, Songjiang, Jiading, Chongming districts and in the Pudong New Area.

The nine points on G15, G2, G50, G40 and G60 expressways are where most accidents occur, Shanghai traffic police said.

The marriage registration centers will be closed for the Spring Festival but will remain open today, Valentine’s Day. It will be a working day on February 24.
