Sentenced for stealing rental bike
A man who stole a 1,800-yuan (US$260) Mobike rental bike has been sentenced to three months with a three-month reprieve for larceny. The migrant worker surnamed Han, aged in his 50s, said he had stolen the bike because it looked “decent and elegant,” Minhang District People’s Court said.
The bike was parked at the entrance of a residential complex in Maqiao Town, where Han lived. Having noticed the bike had not been used for four days, he took it home at about 11pm on September 14.
The bike can only be unlocked through the Mobike mobile application, but Han had not downloaded the app. However, he didn’t return the bike, the court said.
A Mobike staff member noticed the bike was missing via the automatic monitoring system. Police were called and seized Han.
Beijing Mobike Technology Co launched the bicycle-sharing service in Shanghai early this year. It soon became popular across the city, but brought with it problems over theft and vandalism.
