Sensor blamed for wheel scare

A SENSOR failure is being blamed for the capsule of a Ferris wheel which leaned dangerously on one side last week, a watchdog has said.

On July 13, the 50-meter-diameter “Sky Ring” at the Joy City shopping mall in Xizang Road North rolled dangerously, terrifying people sitting inside the capsules.

After an initial investigation, the Jing’an District Market Supervision and Management Bureau said the failure of a sensor caused the capsule to incline about 10 degrees that triggered the capsule’s safety protection function.

As a result of that, the capsule swayed due to gravity.

The relay of the capsule has been changed but it will only be allowed to operate again after 80 hours of no-load tests, the bureau said.

The wheel was cleared by the authorities after the safety tests and started operation in February this year.

A woman surnamed Gu, who along with her mother and daughter, were on the ride recounted their horror to the media.

Gu told Xinmin Evening News that her daughter started panicking as the capsule made scary noises while ascending. She tried to comfort her but at the highest point it got worse.

“The carriage started leaning towards one side, and we were literally left hanging in the sky,” she said.

“My mother was so frightened she collapsed but kept her balance ... I was totally blank and scared to death.”

The capsule shook dangerously again as they started the descent.

Gu also complained about the indifferent attitude of the shopping mall staff to the incident.

The bureau said it would strengthen safety supervision and management of the big wheel and its operator.
