Senior ‘smothered husband with pillow’

AN elderly woman is to be charged with murdering her husband by smothering him with a pillow in his hospital bed, prosecutors in Putuo District said yesterday.
The woman in her 70s, surnamed Lian, is said to have killed her husband, a dementia sufferer surnamed Ke, because he was disturbing other patients and had refused treatment.
Ke was hospitalized in November last year for a fractured shoulder, said prosecutors.
However, he created disturbances by shouting in the ward and was diagnosed with dementia.
Staff restrained him to his bed to stop him harming himself or others.
When a nurse made a round of the wards at dawn on November 20, Lian was found smothering Ke with a pillow, said prosecutors.
Lian told police that she felt embarrassed by her husband shouting at night and disturbing other patients, so she covered his mouth with her hand.
When Ke began struggling, Lian is said to have put a pillow over his face, prosecutors said.
She also told police that she regretted it very much.
Prosecutors said the couple often argued after Ke developed dementia.
Lian had been diagnosed with depression and had attempted suicide twice, according to prosecutors.
