Senior hurt in Metro escalator fall ‘told no elevator available’

AN elderly wheelchair user suffered suspected broken ribs in a Metro escalator fall, after it is claimed she was wrongly told that there was no available elevator at the station.

But metro operator Shanghai Shentong Group said yesterday that the accident was due to a misunderstanding between staff and the passenger.

The 89-year-old woman was leaving Pudian Road Station on Metro Line 6 at 2pm on Tuesday with her daughter when they asked a member of Metro staff for help for directions to an elevator. They claim they were told that the elevator was not available.

Instead, they had to use the escalator to reach the ground floor. The elderly woman stood while her daughter, who is in her 60s, held the wheelchair.

However, the mother was too weak to stand for long and leaned back onto her daughter, causing both to topple over.

The older woman suffered two suspected broken ribs, a hospital report said.

Shentong said there is an elevator in the station, but it must be activated by a member of staff.

It said the staff member assumed the woman and her daughter were heading to a supermarket on the same underground floor at the station and so did not direct them to the elevator.

Shentong said it would improve staff training and signage.
