Senior back in jail after getting better
A 73-YEAR-OLD former government official is among four prisoners released on medical probation who have been put back behind bars after recovering, prosecutors in Pudong New Area said yesterday.
The Pudong New Area People’s Procuratorate launched a crackdown earlier this year to ensure that convicts return to jail once their medical condition improves.
According to prosecutors, there are another seven prisoners in the same situation being processed.
The elderly former official, surnamed Ji, was sentenced to life imprisonment for graft in 2002. He was diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes in 2011 and was allowed to return home.
Because his probation had been extended several times, prosecutors told him to undergo a medical examination. When doctors found that Ji’s health was stable, prosecutors said he should return to jail.
Officials said that despite changes to national regulations it wasn’t more difficult for prisoners to apply for medical parole.
