Scheme gives VAT refunds to foreigners
FOREIGN tourists will from tomorrow be entitled to tax refunds on selected purchases made in Shanghai on their departure from the country, the General Administration of Customs of China said yesterday.
The 11 percent VAT rebate applies to purchases of 500 yuan (US$80) or more made on a single day at a participating store, it said, without naming the shops involved.
The offer is open to all “foreigners,” which includes people from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, who have spent no more than 183 consecutive days in China’s mainland, the Ministry of Finance said earlier.
Refunds can be claimed on departure, which must be within 90 days of the purchases being made.
The introduction of the new scheme, which launches concurrently in Beijing, follows a trial program introduced in 2011 in south China’s Hainan Province.
