Safety inspection of buses that run on highways

THE city’s traffic authority said it will launch a safety inspection check of buses, especially relating to safety belts, after an airport shuttle bus accident killed 2 people on Tuesday.

The Shanghai Urban Transportation Administrative Department said yesterday it will inspect the buses on 57 routes that run on expressways.

On Tuesday, a passenger and a ticket conductor died and 10 other people were injured when an Airport Line 4 bus on Huaxia Elevated Road bumped into a road maintenance vehicle and then hit a guardrail.

The administration and traffic law enforcement team examined the involved bus and later spoke to the operator Shanghai Airport Bus Co. They inspected the company’s safety related facilities, rules and trainings.

According to the city’s regulations, every seat on buses running through expressways must be equipped with safety belts. The electronic screen must display safety messages and the passengers must reminded to wear safety belts. The driver should remind passengers to put on the seat belts before starting the vehicle.

The deputy director of transportation administrative department, Zhou Yiqun, told Shanghai Daily that the bus involved in the accident was equipped with safety belts but none of the passengers were wearing them.

“Many people are not aware of the importance of wearing safety belts,” she said. “We hope more passengers will put on the belts during the journey.”

The authority has told all transportation companies to check the condition of their safety belts, particularly of buses that run on expressways. An inspection on safety equipment will be launched soon.
