Safety checks carried out at care homes
A THREE-day fire-safety inspection program got under way on Wednesday at senior care homes across Shanghai in the wake of the fatal blaze in Henan Province.
The operators of such facilities have been ordered to enhance fire drills and training.
They must also draw up plans for dealing with fires and any found to have potential safety hazards have been told to fix them.
The checks also apply to welfare houses, kindergartens and hospitals in the city.
In Minhang District, care workers were ordered by the fire department to keep a close eye on seniors as they cannot “escape” quickly.
Smoking in bed has been banned as it is a potential fire hazard.
Shanghai Vice Party Secretary Ying Yong said yesterday that senior care homes in the city have been ordered to raise safety awareness after the Henan tragedy.
An official at the Pingyang Senior Care Home in Minhang, which has about 200 beds, said a sprinkler system was installed last year and that fire drills are held every three months.
