Russian teacher sacked after ‘sticking adhesive tapes to children’s mouth’

A 25-year-old Russian teacher who worked for a local English training center for children has been fired after being found to 'mistreat' children in her class.

A woman surnamed Zhu told Shanghai Daily that she called the police on Wednesday after her mother-in-law saw the previous day that there was a piece of adhesive tape on the mouth of her son who was sitting in the teacher’s class.

The K&H International School, where the female teacher worked, admitted in a statement on Saturday that the teacher, , known to parents as “Carrie”, “inappropriately stuck double-faced adhesive tapes to the mouths of two children during the interactive session of the class” on Tuesday.

The school “apologized to all parents” in the statement and said it’s “taking steps to annul the teacher’s working permissions.”

Shanghai Television reported on Friday that the teacher had been working in this school for a year but got her working visa and teaching qualification only in October.

Moreover, the Changning branch of the school where the teacher worked doesn’t have a business license, according to Shanghai Television.

Zhu, the mother, said a few children on her son’s class told their parents that the teacher has done this to them probably because they were being “noisy”.

“There are many ways to quiet children down, but it’s not acceptable this way,” said Zhu, who once worked as a school teacher.

She said the parents on the teacher’s class are now seeking to get a refund for the tuition fees they have paid to the school covering the classes taken, but haven’t got a positive answer from the school yet.

“Our kids have been studying at a school without a license,  taught by a teacher without working qualification,” she said.

Zhu said about 100 English classes over nine months at this school for children of her son’s age group cost 15,000 yuan (US$2,178).

The school wasn’t available for comments on Sunday.
