Roof damaged in football stadium fire
A fire at Hongkou Football Stadium at around 8:15am yesterday caused the temporary closure of Metro Line 3 exits 1 and 2 at Hongkou Football Stadium Station.
Hongkou District’s fire department said the fire had broken out at the rock climbing venue at the stadium.
The blaze was put out in an hour and there were no reports of injury.
Investigation on what caused the fire is under way.
All shops and restaurants in the stadium and the indoor sports facilities suspended business yesterday after the stadium operator cut off the power supply.
Hongkou Football Stadium, the country’s first professional football stadium, is the home venue for Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.
The Chinese Super League side has two away matches before taking on Changchun Yatai at Hongkou on April 16, subject to passing a damage report and an evaluation of safety risks.
The rock climbing club stands next to the stadium’s No. 21 Stand.
The damage to the steel structure of the stadium’s half-open roof, as well as the tunnel and steps towards the stand will be evaluated to ensure spectators are safe.
The lighting and electric supply system will also be examined.
