Robberies down, arrests up, say police

SHANGHAI police say robberies and frauds from November 25 to now are down 15 percent over the same period last year, but arrests are up 4 percent.
More plainclothes officers have been deployed in shopping centers such as Xujiahui and the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall to watch out for pickpockets.
In Hongkou District, police said they have caught 25 pickpockets around Qipu Road shopping malls, the Cloud Nine Mall and Sichuan Road N. since the beginning of this year, with the number of cases reported dropping 90 percent.
Yangpu District police said they flew to southwestern China’s Chongqing City to arrest a woman burglar who had allegedly stolen 30,000 yuan (US$4,370) from a few high rise apartments in Shanghai in December.
And in suburban Qingpu District, two suspects have been arrested for defrauding five people of 150,000 yuan by promising to reward them with a new energy car worth 170,000 yuan for the money they spent on expensive tea.
