Reprieve for mistress killer

A MAN who killed his mistress, who was also his business partner, with a hammer during an argument over affairs was sentenced to death yesterday.

However, 42-year-old Liu Jigang was given a two-year reprieve because he handed himself in to police, the Shanghai Railway Intermediate Court ruled.

This means that provided Liu behaves well in jail over the next two years his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment.

Liu, a native of central China’s Hubei Province, worked in Shanghai while his family remained in Hubei.

In 2012 he began living with his victim, surnamed Yu, in a railway warehouse they rented for their aluminum alloy sales business.

On August 25 last year, the couple were arguing about affairs when Liu struck Yu, 41, on the head several times with a hammer, the court heard.

She later died of head injuries.

Liu fled to his hometown in Hubei but was injured in an accident on August 29 and sent to hospital.

There he asked his wife to report the murder and was held by police.

Shanghai police found Yu’s body after breaking into the warehouse.
