Red letter day for Hongkou as it is set to open its riverside paths

HONGKOU District will open its 2.5-kilometer-long riverside areas to the public on Saturday. They are part of the city government’s plan to open 45km-long continuous paths on both sides of Huangpu River this year.
Residents will be able to walk or cycle from Waibaidu Bridge to Qinhuangdao Road along the river through new paths that serve walkers, joggers and cyclists.
The paths lie in an area that served the city’s earliest cargo and passenger harbors.
“The Hongkou riverside section will become the best place to take a postcard photo of the Bund, the Lujiazui area or the North Bund,” said Xuan Yizhou, director of the district construction management committee.
A total of 310,000 square meters of the waterfront areas in Hongkou District will be opened with a total of 6.3km of new paths along the way. The greenery area covers 137,000 square meters, mostly being newly planted for the riverside opening campaign, according to the district government.
The waterfront area was previously owned by state-owned enterprises as office buildings, cargo ports or a cruise terminal and had long been closed to the public.
The district government began turning the former ports into public areas last September.
A skywalk and sightseeing platforms have been built to connect the three major bottlenecks — an outdoor restaurant, a ferry port and a cruise terminal — along the waterfront path, Xuan said.
A 150-meter-long sightseeing platform has been built in front of the state-owned Seagull on the Bund hotel near Waibaidu Bridge.
A pedestrian skywalk has been constructed to connect two pieces of greenery of the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal.
A rooftop garden has been built on the Gongping Road Ferry Port to be part of the sightseeing platforms along the river. A bridge that can be raised has been placed in front of a yacht port to allow both the pedestrians and yachts access to the riverside area, Xuan added.
Sports facilities for children and seniors have been erected along the riverside way, said Zhou Jing, director of the Hongkou sports bureau.
Outdoor theaters and basketball courts will be added to the waterfront in future, Zhou added.
Pets and square dance squads will be banned from entering the area, an official with the North Bund Development Group said. Business events will be allowed only if they have permission from the district government.
