Rates for mobile data plans slashed

SHANGHAI mobile users will be able to enjoy lower rates for their mobile data services from next month and special discounts at night and during national festivals, China Mobile announced yesterday.

In the new data packages, smartphone users will pay 50 yuan (US$8) for two gigabyte 4G data, which now costs them 70 yuan.

They will only pay 10 yuan for one gigabyte data at night.

The country’s biggest mobile carrier will also offer special discounts during Mid-Autumn Festival in September and National Day holiday in October.

It follows the country’s national strategy to offer faster broadband and lower Internet costs to encourage information consumption.

China’s major mobile carriers, including rivals like China Telecom and China Unicom, announced faster broadband services and a new round of discounts on Internet charges in May, following the government’s call for more advanced digital systems.

Consumers however pointed out that the night data plan served little purpose as most of them are hooked on to Wi-Fi family networks.

China Mobile’s night data plan is only available between 11pm and 8 am and with 2G and 3G networks in Shanghai.

China Mobile also plans to kick off unlimited daily data package for Chinese outbound tourists, starting from 30 yuan to 90 yuan a day, the company said.
