Pudong joins crackdown on bike problems

PUDONG New Area has begun setting up banned areas for both parking and riding bikes in a bid to resolve problems caused by the shared-bike craze.
It ordered that all bikes, whether private or rented, cannot be parked around the Lujiazui area, some roads in the Huamu area and the Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone. It also listed 33 roads, most of them heavily used by traffic and without bicycle lanes such as the Century Avenue, Zhangyang Road and Pudong Road S., where bikes cannot be ridden.
The major rental bike industry players including Mobike and Ofo have been told to report each month how many new bikes they plan to operate across Pudong to the government.
The government has also issued a mobile phone App to invite Pudong residents to take pictures and report any bike violations to the authorities.
Apart from the restricted areas, several designated parking areas for bikes have also be set up near Metro stations on lines 6 and 7.
Downtown Huangpu and Jing’an districts have already launched similar crackdowns on problems caused by the shared-bike by setting up banned areas and enhancing supervision.
Bike-rental services have grown rapidly since appearing on the city’s streets a year ago.
