Pudong airport raises security level after blast injures 4

SUSPECTED home-made explosive objects blew up inside the T2 terminal at Pudong International Airport this afternoon, injuring at least four travelers, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

The airport authority has upgraded the security check level at the Pudong airport. Now each passenger and his or her luggages are to be inspected at the entrances into the terminal buildings, the authority said.

The blast occurred at 2:20pm near the C check-in counter flights for Thai Airways at T2. Armed police have restricted the area. The injurers have been sent to hospital, the authority said. Other flights at the airport are unaffected.

The Pudong New Area People’s Hospital has received four people injured from the blast at the Pudong airport, including one man seriously injured, the hospital said in a statement.

The neck vein of the man, looking about 30 years old, was cut and partly broken off after being sent to the hospital by ambulance at around 3pm, the hospital said.

An initial investigation has found evidence suggesting that the man's injury could have been self-induced.

The other injured include a 53-year-old Philippine man, as well as a 67-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, both of whom are Chinese. They sustained injuries to their heads, hands, legs and buttocks, the hospital said.

A video taken by surveillance camera at T2 shows that travelers waiting in line in front of the check-in counters suddenly spread out and run out of the area in panic. A blast with a flash and smoke then took place in the middle of the area.
