Project for traumatized families to be expanded

A COMMUNITY project that provides mental health care for childless families will be extended to other districts next year after it achieved the desired result in three districts this year, the Shanghai Women’s Federation said yesterday.
The project was tried out in Changning, Zhabei and Hongkou districts this year and benefitted over 180 families, the federations said.
Most of them were seniors who were recovering from the trauma of losing their only child. About 95 percent of the 180-plus families are emotionally stable now after project volunteers paid them regular visits, officials said.
The 100-plus volunteers would visit the families at least once a month and communicated with them by making calls, texting or chatting on WeChat. In some cases, they accompanied the seniors to the doctors, cinemas and shopping.
The project also included talks and health courses or arranging light events like chorus singing or public dance.
Zhao Hongdi, a project official, gave an example of the kind of work involved. In one case, a senior couple in their sixties, whose 26-year-old son died from a blood-related disease, blamed the hospital. They kept filing “medical negligence” petition but it didn’t help. In desperation, they thought of killing the doctor before committing suicide. But volunteers provided them psychological counseling that helped them recover from their trauma and eased the pain of their loss.
