Products sold online fail quality tests

ABOUT 38 percent of the 200-plus batches of clothing, bags and small household appliances sold on popular online shopping sites like tmall.com, yhd.com and jd.com and the official websites of H&M and ASOS have failed quality tests, the city’s market watchdog said yesterday.

The substandard rate of the products sold online was higher than that at real stores, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said.

A total of 94 batches of products out of the 246 batches sold online were substandard, the bureau said.

Inspectors said they found that business operators had lax management over product quality that were sold online.

In addition, the lack and misleading product label was equally serious, making it difficult for consumers to trace those who can be held responsible, officials said.

Some 68 percent of bags and suitcases out of the 60 batches checked had quality problems on vibrating impact performance, seam strength and labeling, the bureau said.

Some bags opened zippers, broke or separated handles during vibrating impact tests, while poor seam strength could likely break bags when filled to the brim.

Two batches of handbags marked with ASOS Shanghai as producer failed in vibrating impact performance test, while two batches of bags marked Forever 21 Shanghai and sold on tmall.com had the same problem as well as seam strength.

The bureau checked 116 batches of clothing sold on 25 websites, and found 30 of them substandard.

Among those checked, 32 batches were sold on official websites of clothing companies, and seven were substandard. The substandard rate reached 21.9 percent, posing a big increase from the overall rate last year, the bureau said.

Poor color fastness, unmatched fiber content, excessive formaldehyde, a high pH index and labeling were some of the problems in substandard clothing sold online.
