Price is not right for Emart

HYPERMARKET chain Emart has been fined 50,000 yuan (US$8,064) by the market watchdog in Huangpu District for misleading pricing at an outlet.

The so-called original prices of several products featured on advertising leaflets at Emart’s Laoximen store were higher than previous ones, meaning there was no discount offered on some products at all, a number of consumers had complained to Shanghai Radio.

Emart claimed it was offering a 20 percent discount on a pack of beef jerky which had an original price of 23.8 yuan — with its current price 18.9 yuan on its promotion leaflet.

But the price was also 18.9 yuan less than a week before the “discount” was offered, as shown by a receipt, Shanghai Radio reported yesterday.

And a pack of red dates said to be given a 63 percent discount of 34 yuan was in fact only 2 yuan cheaper than the original price as the outlet hiked its prices on the leaflets, the report said.

The same practice also occurred with candy and milk products.
