Pregnant woman escapes detention

A woman who arranged for her lover’s wife to be beaten up was yesterday sentenced to eight months’ detention with a one-year reprieve at the Zhabei District People’s Court.

The three men involved in the attack were detained for between five and a half months and six months, with no reprieve.

All four were found guilty of intentional injury.

According to the court, the woman, surnamed Liu, met her lover, surnamed Xie, in 2012 while working as a waitress in nightclub in the Pudong New Area. Xie told Liu he was divorced and the pair embarked on a relationship.

In March last year, Liu became pregnant. Xie’s response was to order her to have an abortion. Liu then found out Xie was married, but after he promised to leave his wife, Liu agreed to keep seeing him.

However, when Xie’s wife moved to Shanghai she found out about the affair. About the same time, Xie’s sister also found out and accused Liu of breaking up a marriage.

Angered by the accusation, Liu contacted a female friend, surnamed Yu, in Shandong Province who agreed to go to Shanghai with some others to “teach the wife a lesson.”

In August, Yu and her three accomplices broke into Xie’s home and beat up his wife. The victim suffered a broken jaw and nose.

Liu and an accomplice were arrested three months later, while the other accomplices handed themselves in.

Liu was given the suspended sentence as she is pregnant again, the court heard. Yu is being tried in a separate case.
