Pools shut over health breaches

TWELVE swimming pools were ordered to suspend business after they were found to contain excessive amount of residual chlorine, urea and bacteria, the city sanitation officials said yesterday.

The sanitation supervision authority of the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission has stepped up inspection and testing on local swimming pools as they become busier in the summer heatwave.

From July 17 to 31, it inspected 286 pools. Nineteen were found with excessive amounts of residual chlorine, urea and bacteria and told to rectify their problems.

Twelve with severe problems were ordered to suspend operations and reopen after tests confirming they meet health standards.
