Pompidou Center’s expertise coming here

FRANCE’S Pompidou Center will hold a five-year art exhibition project with Xuhui’s West Bund group at the Huangpu River waterfront from 2019.

The group and the renowned Paris cultural center have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to initiate the long-term cooperation project between France and China through 2024.

It becomes “the highest-standard cultural exchange project” of such long duration between China and France in the cultural field, according to the group that takes charge of the riverside development of Xuhui. More than 20 high standard exhibitions and events will take place at the Pompidou Center Shanghai (West Bund) during the five-year project, the Paris institution said.

“This cultural cooperation will also resonate at the Pompidou Center to organize a number of projects displaying Chinese art in Paris,” said the French cultural center, which has one of the world’s largest modern and contemporary art collections.

Furthermore, regular bilateral academic exchanges, training and exchange programs of international museum operation and management will also be held through the five-year period, according to the memorandum.

The project will officially launch in early 2019, when residents will be able to visit, experience and engage with the exhibitions and various artistic projects elaborated by the Pompidou Center Shanghai.

The exhibitions will be themed on the development history of world’s contemporary arts between 20th and 21st centuries.

The under-construction West Bund Art Museum will serve as the venue for the common project of Pompidou Center and West Bund Group.

The museum with a building area of nearly 25,000 square meters, is located in the core area of Xuhui Waterfront Public Open Space and designed by British architect David Chipperfield.

Construction on the building began at the end of 2016 and is due to be completed by the end of 2018, the group said.

Opened in 1977, the Pompidou Center has almost 120,000 works of art. Its collection constitutes a key reference for 20th and 21st century art.

From its original holdings to its most recent acquisitions, the collection covers painting, sculpture, artworks, photography, new media, experimental cinema, as well as architecture and design.

Xuhui District is developing its waterfront area covering 9.4 square kilometers into the West Bund Culture Corridor, the Museum Mile, the West Bund Media Port, Shanghai Dream Center and other key projects.

With a series of cultural endeavors such as the Long Museum West Bund, Yuz Museum, Shanghai Center of Photography, Tank Shanghai Art Park and Start Museum, the West Bund Museum Mile is beginning to take shape to become a major culture and art cluster in Asia by the end of 2020, according to the district government.

In addition, the West Bund Media Port slated to be completed by the end of 2020, will be the core of a central business zone of culture and media, housing an array of well-known enterprises, such as Tencent, Hunan Television, Wonders Information and Yoozoo.com, the group said.
