Police put illegal weapons to the sword

SHANGHAI police destroyed more than 7,400 swords, knives and daggers, and 360 replica guns in Baoshan District yesterday.
The objects were seized in the first six months of this year, police said.
During the period, police said they had solved 29 cases involving guns, arrested 36 suspects and had shut down 14 websites that sold illegal weapons. Most of the guns and swords were turned in by individuals and companies in Shanghai, police said.
They told Shanghai Daily that some of the swords had been bought by locals in other countries or from illegal websites in China, and some weapons were forged by enthusiasts.
Most of the guns were air pistols turned in by their owners, police said. Shanghai police no longer renew licenses for air pistols.
Some of the illegal weapons were seized from railway and Metro passengers.
People who bring illegal weapons onto public transport or to public places face being detained for up to 10 days and fined up to 500 yuan (US$74). If public safety is endangered, they also face three years in jail, according to the law.
Meanwhile, no individual, company or organization is allowed to possess replica guns in China, and those who manufacture and sell replica guns face up to 15 days in detention and five times the manufacturing costs or sales of the guns.
Police encourage people to report suspects involved in manufacturing, selling, transporting or keeping banned daggers, guns, explosives and lethal chemicals. Rewards of up to 50,000 yuan are offered.
