Police investigate Metro ‘groping’
POLICE are investigating a case in which a female passenger was touched by a man on a Metro train, sparking outrage online.
Footage of the incident was posted on the Internet, leading to web users claiming to have tracked down the male commuter said to be involved.
Shanghai Metro police confirmed that a woman came forward yesterday and reported that she had been touched on the thigh by a man while traveling on a Metro Line 9 train last Tuesday.
The incident came to widespread notice when a video clip recorded by a witness was uploaded to weibo.com.
In the footage, a woman wearing shorts is seen standing by the train door when a man sitting nearby touches her thigh. When the woman turns round, he looks away.
Police said they received no complaints of an assault that day.
But angry web users began a “human flesh search” to try to discover the man’s identity, and claimed that he was a manager with a local travel agency.
According to an earlier report, the man involved had, accompanied by the boss of his company, already gone to a police station.
It was reported that he claimed to have touched the woman on the subway train by accident.
He has left the travel company, it was reported.
