Police in hunt for travel website hacker

A TRAVEL website is cooperating with the police after personal information about its customers was compromised following an attack by an unidentified computer hacker.
Baicheng.com said it has alerted the authorities and has contacted a “small number of people” who were affected by the incident.
The system problem has been dealt with and anyone who suffered a financial loss as a result of it will be compensated, the company said.
The incident came to light after several people complained of being bombarded with phone calls after using a visa service offered through the website.
A woman surnamed Wang said she was contacted by a person claiming to work for Baicheng a day after buying a visa for a trip to South Korea, the Shanghai Morning Post reported yesterday.
The person was very convincing and knew all the details of Wang’s transaction, she said.
So when he informed her that her original payment had not been processed and that she would have to make another, she agreed to do so.
Even though Wang had earlier received a text message from her bank saying the transaction had been completed successfully, she gave out her bankcard details to the mystery caller.
Only later did she realize she had been swindled and called the police.
Baicheng said that while it did not know the identity of the swindler, it denied that any of its employees were involved in the scam.
In response to the incident, the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission issued a reminder to people to always exercise extreme caution when purchasing goods or services over the Internet.
