Shanghai police bust prostitution ring, catch 25 suspects

A prostitution ring that was using WeChat to promote its services and offer discounts was smashed by police in Jiading District, netting 25 suspects, officers said yesterday.
Thirteen suspects remained in custody and are expected to face a trial. The other 12 were given administrative detentions before being released, police said.
The ring first entered police radar earlier this month when it posted some adverts on overseas websites, saying a sauna in Jiading provided “special” services.
Police then spoke to employees of neighboring shops and learned the sauna, originally a foot massage parlor, attracted brisk business after it had been refitted and opened again in April.
The sauna had surveillance cameras and customers seeking sex services were taken to hidden rooms, officers said.
Later police found the sauna marketed its prostitution services on WeChat and QQ. Customers who followed the sauna’s WeChat account were entitled to discounts of up to 150 yuan (US$24).
The ring also set up several QQ groups for customers. Within one month these QQ groups had more than 1,000 members, police said.
On May 12, Jiading police raided the sauna and captured more than 50 people, including 10 who were providing or partaking in prostitution.
After being caught, the sauna’s owner, surnamed Shu, said he met a man surnamed Feng who helped him attract customers online. Both Shu and Feng were among the 13 facing criminal charges, police said.
